Northeast Mississippi Community College Pipe Welding Class 2011 (Under Development)

This page will be used to record some of the things going on in pipe welding class.

Nov-2011

I was contacted to take over for an instructor that had to leave 2 Months into the class. There was no communication with the previous instructor nor could I find any curriculum .All of the students were beveling 6.625 OD A500 Structural Pipe. and welding in in various positions. Based upon the weld quality, I decided we would all go through some "refresher training".

Jan 2012

We now have students welding on pipe. The basic progression through the class is as follows

bullet Verify Skills by showing the ability to...

Weld a visually acceptable fillet weld in a tee joint in the vertical and overhead position

Weld an Open root using E6010 1/8" Diameter in a 6" long x 3/16" thick flat bar. Vertical, horizontal and overhead.

Weld a simulated heavy wall vee groove using 2 flat bars at 60 degree included angle. Weld in the Vertical, overhead and Horizontal position.

Perform a 3G and 4G open root, 6010/7018 weld sample with 2 macros with no visible discontinuities.

bulletPractice SMAW pipe welding by...

Welding a single and multipass fillet weld on a 4" pipe with a 1/4" end plate. Position 2F, 5F, and 6F

Pad weld around a 6" Pipe with the pipe cl horizontal, vertical and inclined 45 Deg.

Weld 2G, 5G, and 6G practice coupons with macros and bend tests to verify weld quality.

Perform qualification testing on the position chosen by the student on a 6" Schedule 80 pipe coupon. Acceptance criteria to be in accordance with ASME Sec IX and ASME/ANSI B31.1.

bulletVerify/Build GTAW Welding Skills by

Weld a visually acceptable fillet weld in a tee joint in the vertical and overhead position

Weld an Open root using ER70S-X wire in a 6" long x 3/16" thick flat bar bevelled to 65 degrees included angle. Vertical, horizontal and overhead. Fill and Cap with GTAW

Most students have progressed to welding pipe. All have considerably improved their skills. A few have progressed through 2G and 5G 6010/7018 pipe weld practice welds.

March 1 2012

Congratulations to the 2011-2012 night welding class. Students attended the class from November Through February completing a total of over 900 combined training hours. Training was self paced and customized for each students starting skill level. Training included Basic SMAW in the flat, vertical, and overhead positions. Once proficient, students progressed to pipe welding training on 6" pipe using the SMAW process. Students showing sufficient skill were allowed to perform welder performance qualification testing in accordance with ASME Sec IX.
